Selected Roads in 1803
By 1803 the United States had a well-developed road network between many urban centers and outlying towns. The main purpose of these roads was either postal or military. Roads were unpaved and in poor condition much of the time – either dusty or muddy and always full or ruts and potholes. Paved roads began appearing at this time, with the Lancaster Pike being the finest example of its time. |
