Joe and Lou Wells, pioneers of the Deary area. From Trees Grew Tall: 'Joe came from North Carolina with the Wells brothers, Frank and Crom, in 1889. He had been a slave, born in 1858, and freed by the Civil War. The Wells brothers took him as their ward and treated him like a brother. Joe loved them equally, and took their surname. When the Wells came West, Joe and his young wife, Lou, came along. '

Showing the character of a 'County Road.' The site is reminiscent of McGary Butte and parts of the Ruby Creek area, but is not definitely recognized; nor is the occupant of the buggy.
This was in the days of poorly graded 'state' roads. The hill was a proving ground for early autos. Any that could make the last steep slope without going into low gear was 'quite a car.'' From The Trees Grew Tall by John B. Miller.

At the extreme left is the 'cottage' where Lillian Fosberry was born. Behind it is the cabin where railway engineers were housed. Located on the east side of Main Street. A large group of people are gathered on the porch.
A Marion steam log loader with three crew members sitting on the boom.
The apparent location is just east of the site of main street. The railroad, built the following year, passed through or just behind the place where the buildings stand. In the foreground is the stable. Beyond, seen to the left and right of the broken snag of a tree, are the main living quarters. At right center, their partly drawn flaps just visible, are two tents mounted over frame floors.

Construction of the main street in Bovill. The building at left was probably first built as a store, but later housed the Major and Peters Barber Shop. The other structures are the frames of the E.K. Parker store and the Sherman House. Through the gap--later filled by other structures, from the Bovill Drug and Spokane Hotel down to the Grant and Giles store--are seen a Shay locomotive and tent. At right is a rod engine. Construction of the Parker store is dated by his daughter, Marie, as 1908.

In front of Bovill's second school, located in the upper block of Main Street somewhat north of the intersection with Pine Street. This was in 1909-1910 term. Standing in front left to right are Dr. R.T. Witty, a Simmons girl, and Mr. Simmons. Along the wall are a bunch of cane fishing poles and, hanging on the door-jam, are logger's boots. The building also housed the Max Davis Drug Store, whose sign is visible at the upper left: 'M. Davis, druggist - Ready to serve you day and night.' The store was on Main Street just east of First Avenue, where the service station now stands.
Deary about 1909, looking north across the main road, which is now the highway. The first building on the left is the Don Sahlin saloon. Beyond the corner, with a false front facing east and a gable at rear facing south, is the Bill Smith store. The buildings above are not seen clearly, but the peaked roofs of both the hardware and drug store can be distinguished, and the bank certainly existed. Farther up and to the left is the railway station, and well beyond it the Hugh Henry house. Buildings on the east (right) side of the street include the McQueary Hotel, the harness shop, and the Carlson Hotel. In the right-hand section beyond the tracks is the McGown home.

A McGiffin log loader. Bill Deary is in the front of the group of people standing on the car. In the center of the car is likely Frank Mallory. Log loaders are also called steam donkeys, or yarders. The housing was a donkey house. The operator is called a donkey puncher.

There is no confirming knowledge, nor are there any landmarks, but there were, indeed, two separate mills at Nora. The terrain and character of the timber look as they should for the Nora area.
One carload of logs is complete, and the marion tops off the load on one end of the second car. A depression is left at the center of the load, and a chain goes around before the load is finished. The weight of one large or several smaller top logs on the chain keeps it tight and the load secure.

In the background at left is the frame of a new building, probably the Gropp store. Dimly seen above the horse's rump is a two-story building once the J.A. Anderson store, which stood at Pine and 1st.

The logs commonly linked together by chain-tie 'dogs.' Several of these ran together with a shallow groove between parallel wooden timbers. A trickle of water often flowed here to provide lubrication.

A bundle of logs is lifted by a marion jammer. A marion or a jammer slides from car to car, by means of a winch, during the loading process. At each new stop, it loads the space just vacated. The fundamental difference was the swinging boom on the marion, as opposed to a fixed boom on the jammer.

Anna Marie Anderson was a pioneer teacher in the school at Helmer and other schools near Deary and Troy. Many years later, as Anna Marie Oslund (after marriage) she was awarded the honor of being an Idaho 'mother of the Year.'
On the steep slope, the grade was nearly forty percent. Empty cars were pulled to the top and the full ones lowered by means of the wire cable which lies beside the rails.

Buildings are identified in book caption: 'Looking northwest from a point not far from the school. The McQueary Hotel hides part of the west side of Main Street. Above it are the hardware and drug store, both characterized by false fronts with peaks. The flat roof between is part of the drugstore. Next is the box-like shape of the bank. Up the street, partly hidden, is a larger building that at this time or later housed the Olson store, and over is is seen the roof of the depot. The largest building on the east side of the street - the one with many windows - is the Carlson Hotel. Above it, just below the railroad crossing, is the newspaper office.'

Book caption: On the left, in order, are the pool hall, post office; Peterson building (Albert Pierce store), and a building (previously the Olson store) which at this date house the barber shop and Dr. Faust's office. The other large bldgs. have already been identified. The large building above the bank was, at this time, occupied either by Olson or Sam Anderson. Of interest in this picture are the cars. The forward three of the line-up are a Reo owned by Jorgeson, a Winton owned by Drury, and a Studebaker. The REO is a 1911 REO 30 Touring car, capacity of 5 passengers. The Winton is probably a 1910 Winton Six (by the number of passengers that appear, the removal of the roof makes the identification difficult). The Studebaker is believed to be a Garford, but may be unidentifiable based on this photograph.
A group that was present when the 'King' (the tree featured in the frontispiece of the book) was cut down. Seen at left center is the Opera House. Next to it is the David Boarding House, built after the 1912 fire, and at far left saloon building that burned in 1914. In the distance (center) is the Catholic Church and to its right, the school. The dark building in the semi-foreground is the Chapin home. In the original photo could be seen the studding of the dance hall wing which Chapin built to entertain prospective buyers of cedar poles. Toward the right is the square frame house which started as a brothel.

The buildings beginning from left to right are the Major and Peters Barber Shop, Bovill Drug Store, Spokane Hotel, Anderson and Anderson Barbershop, Idle Hour Pool Hall, (J.I. Brocke), Grant and Giles drygoods, E.K. Parker men's furnishings, post office and newstand, and the Sherman House (then E. Haverland).
After reconstruction, the post office was placed inside the E.K. Parker store. Here it is, with Dan Featherstone, postmaster, and dry goods section of the store.

The Camp 8 crew, standing in front of a donkey engine that is rigged, evidently as a jammer type loader, on a flat-car. On the hill behind is the mess of burned timber left by the 1914 fire. In line are Grandpa Hughes, Bill Hughes, Ed Connors, Byers Sanderson; Perd Hughes, Arlie Smith, Henry Smith, Young Bill Hughes, Sammy Lowe, George Chrystal, Charlie Rist (blacksmith), Billy Coffield, Oscar Palm (blacksmith, bald head), Frank Sanderson, Andy Breeding. The man on the machine is not identified.
A big pole, possibly ninety feet long. This was during early years, possibly 1914, when the pole storage extended along track 5, into the area east of the Elk River road. Note extensive timber extending to the flat past wheat was the George Chrystal place, and the fresh litter of recent logging on the hill beyond, in the direction of the present airport.

A panorama showing the disaster of Main Street as it appeared on July 4, 1914. Not much stands except a brick chimney. To the right of the chimney is the Harry Roach house and then the Chapin house. Log piles occupy the open area of the St. Germain pasture, and beyond these is the cedar yard. Only half of an original long panorama which scanned from east to south has been reproduced here (see 12-83b).

Seen in the first doorway is E.K. Parker. In the 2nd, with another man a little to one side, is Dan Featherstone. A showbill: 'Black Crow' minstrel type - The Oldest and Best Theatre - Tuesday, January 12.' Another bill on the wall of the store is readable in except for three words here reproduced as blanks: The Road to Ruin - an uplift drama with a cast of Broadway stars. The _____ _____ _____ people - 250 scenes.'

The gymnasium is the large building beyond the church and to its right. Near the photo center, white and square, is the Morris Drug. Toward the camera from the drugstore is the meat market (gabled windows), which was run by Jockheck. Eastward across the street are other stores, the bank, and post office. The Catholic church stands prominently of the farther hillslope, with Shattuck Butte behind behind {sic} it. Well to the right are Potlatch buildings, the railroad tracks, and the lumber yards of the mill.'

A big snowfall, seen at the Bovill Hotel. This, of April 1, 1917, is part of the heavy snow that fell in the corresponding winter. The photo also shows construction which forms the angle of the building and joins the former store (with added veranda, right) with the original hotel building (left). This central section was built in 1910 or thereabout. The 'post-office lean-to,' a structure added in 1908 on the south side of the store, does not show.

The body of Arnold Asvald, killed in France, was buried in Deary after the war. This contingent of veterans from Deary and Bovill formed the honor guard at the funeral. The officer (rear) is Henry Black. Ensign Gallegher marches ahead of him. Byers Sanderson is in the rear rank, second from the right. Leo Guilfoy also represented Bovill.

This was in 1919 when she and her husband Frank lived at Camp 6, near Helmer. Susan made weekly trips to Bovill with her team for supplies.

From Trees Grew Tall: 'More than 75,000 cedar posts go up in flames in the southwest part of the cedar yard. This one, in 1920, was the only serious fire ever to occur in the yard. Rails on track 1 were broken by the heat and curled into spirals. The woman in the foreground is Mrs. Ellison.'
