Created in 1869 (16 U.S. Stat. 40), the board's function was to oversee, along with the Secretary of the Interior, the disbursement of funds to the various tribes from the Office of Indian Affairs., as well as auditing purchases and inspecting reservations. Limited in power and scope, the board did, however, influence policy and public opinion, with the allotment of lands a favored solution to Native American survival. Included in the board's reports are a number of the proceedings from the Lake Mohonk conferences, whose participants included humanitarians, leaders from the religious societies who had missions among the Indian tribes, and members of the Indian Rights Association.
