Abstract:
Twenty-four pure-bred pigs, raised on the University farm, were used in this experiment. Twelve of them were Poland Chinas and twelve were Duroc Jerseys. They ranged in size from 32 to 97 pounds, the average being 65.9 pounds. They were divided into four pens of six each, three Polands and three Durocs in each pen. Eighteen were boards, all but four of which were castrated, living one boar in each pen. As nearly as possible, the pigs were divided into equal froups, so that they would be uniform, and so that one pen would not have an advantage over the other. The initial weights of the pens were: - 407, 399, 384, and 398 respectively.
