Abstract:
There is scarcely any phase of agriculture of greater importance than the seed question, and none in which slighter differences produce greater results. A little investigation of the great losses annually, as the result of poor seed will justify the most vigorous efforts to prevent them. A little extra effort and expense in securing and sowing the best seeds will be followed by good results, far out of proportion to the slight additional cost. Systematized seed control has long been in operation in Europe, and it is comparatively recent that several states in the United States have adopted laws to prevent intentional fraud in the seed trade, and to control the dumping of low grade seed upon the American market, since the rigid laws of foreign countries protect their home trade. The object of Pure Seed laws is to require the dealers and farmers to secure seed of a better quality than they have been contented to handle previously, and to establish seed inspection.
