Looking north, at the Cliff Creek drainage across Big Creek, from the Taylor Wilderness Research Station - c.1928 and 2019

These photographs look south from Taylor Wilderness Research Station to the Cliff Creek drainage and bighorn sheep lambing cliffs. Big Creek runs across the bottom of the photo where the conifers and riparian trees and shrubs grow along its banks. In the early 20th century, Taylor Wilderness Research Station was a property owned by Dave Lewis, also known as Cougar Dave. Dave Lewis is a prominent figure in the settler history of the Big Creek drainage. He came into the Big Creek drainage as a cavalryman during the 1879 Sheepeater Campaign, and returned the next year to claim the 65-acre homestead that became Taylor Wilderness Research Station. Dave Lewis worked for the Forest Service for a time, gaining a reputation for hunting and killing mountain lions and other predatory game, hence the moniker “Cougar Dave”.
