The Lewis Cabin at Taylor Wilderness Research Station - 1932 and 2019

In the historical photograph, US Forest Service forest supervisor Richard Rutledge throws a diamond hitch over a load which this horse will carry. This photo hangs in the cabin that is featured in it, which still exists as the Lewis Cabin at the Taylor Wilderness Research Station. The contents of the photograph are unique in a handful of ways, a couple of which are described. First, the reminder of the presence of stock in the Idaho backcountry, and the old methods, such as a diamond hitch. Secondly, since so many of the structures along Big Creek were burned prior to wilderness designation in 1980, structures like the Lewis Cabin allow parts of the past to continue to exist tangibly in the present.
