- Description:
- A photograph of Train Engines No. 11 and 12, of which wait out an uncertain future in Nez Perce, Idaho in the summer of 1973. No. 11, a 1936 built Plymouth, 250 HP was acquired from the Ohio & Morenci in 1952. No. 12, a 1935 built Packard, 190 HP was acquired from the Detroit Harbor Terminals in 1952, at a bargain price of $40,000/00 for the twin engines. The two gas powered locomotives pulled the Nez Perce out of the Depression, using only $5.00 worth of gasoline for the 27 mile round trip to Craigmont, Idaho, where a steam locomotive would burn $30.00 worth of coal. For 20 years, the tiny four-wheelers pulled the heave wheat loaded box cars out of the Nez Perce prairie.
