Abstract
In spite of years of continued (slow) growth, participation of women in STEM disciplines remains low. In particular, the physics workforce in academia and national laboratories is one area in which women are significantly underrepresented. Prof. Sammarruca will present an analysis of recent data and reports and discuss institutional and cultural barriers, as identified through the stories of female scientists.
Biography
Francesca Sammarruca has been a Physics Department faculty at the University of Idaho since 1992. She holds physics degrees from the University of Pavia in Italy and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Her scholarship is in the area of theoretical nuclear physics. Over the years, she has been concerned with the issue of participation of women in physics. In 2010, she received a University of Idaho Outstanding Service Award in recognition of her efforts towards gender equity.
