Manuscript Group 104
Records, 1905-1980
3 c.f.
The Records of the Nez Perce Farmers County Mutual Fire Insurance Co. were donated to the University of Idaho Library by Bill Blewett, a sales representative for the company, in December 1980. They were processed by Judith Nielsen in August 1985.
The Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company was incorporated on January 7, 1905 for a period of fifty years. In 1912 the name was changed to the Nez Perce Farmers County Mutual Fire Insurance Company, and the amended articles of incorporation filed in August 1952 provided for perpetual corporate existence. The company originally had its offices in Mohler, Lewis County, but in 1912 moved to Nezperce. In 1951 it moved to Cameron, and by 1967 the offices were located in Kendrick.
The affairs of the company are governed by a board of ten directors elected by the membership for a three year term on a rotational basis. The directors and officers also act as agents for the company which solicits memberships in the counties of Clearwater, Idaho, Latah, Lewis, and Nez Perce. Policy holders are subject to assessments for payments of losses and expenses.
The records of the Nez Perce Farmers County Mutual Fire Insurance Company span the years 1905-1980, with the bulk of the material covering the years 1960-1978.
The material includes correspondence, the articles of incorporation, various types of tax returns, financial reports, cash books, and a policy register.
The records in this group were separated into two series, one of financial records and ledgers, the other non-financial material. The first series is non-financial material and contains the articles of incorporation, notices of two Department of Insurance hearings, and correspondence. From 1924 to 1960 there is very little correspondence and the majority of the later correspondence, 1960 to 1979, is with the General Reinsurance Corporation in Los Angeles.
Most of the items in this manuscript group are financial and include bank records of interest earned on deposits, FHA loan statements, tax returns, annual reports, policy registers and cash books. The company maintained no formal ledger but the cash books represent detailed income and disbursement ledgers.
One bound volume of duplicate policies written from 1935 to 1942 was removed from the collection as were four years of Director's Records and five volumes of assessment records since summaries of the last two items are contained in the cash books. A total of 1 c.f. of material was removed.
