Mr Wm Rankin

Dear Sir
I am afraid I annoy Mr Rankin by my unbusiness way of doing as I cause S.L. McB useless and needless perplexities by it sometimes. (My school expenses - never light – (expenses properly belonging to the womens school as much to it as to this school still falling wholly to my sphere). So while writing to Dr Lowrie I will obey Mr Rankins suggestions in his last letter in regard to promptness, for once.

Mr Rankins last letter (which I find I have mislaid, and for which I cannot take time now to search) enclosed a check for my salary up to Jan 1st, 1884 so that there is only due me from that time up to the present. My pupils are beginning to be busy with their spring work which does not lessen my work only extends it, to any hour of the day. Those who could not be with us in school hours coming when they can find a leisure hour. They know their teacher is always ready for them.

I reported my school so fully in my last. There is no change since then. My pupils are as hungry to know as ever. We have had a very busy and I think profitable winter, although I have scarcely touched the M.S.S. of the English Nez Perce vocabulary (or Dic) we have in preparation for the press. My pupils who could write, as nearly all can now, out of school hours have been busy copying into blank books which I bought for them. The M.S.S. partial voc, which I prepared for them last summer. Besides this James [missing]

School M.S.S. Dic about 100 new words weekly which my more advanced pupils pencilled down for their ‘blank book voc.’ While I was attending to the new pupils. This even partial voc is a great help to them, a real treasure which they prize above price.

James Hayes has been (is) very much help to me though he still continues his own studies, as of old. I do not know what I would do without him. Since Mark Williams death, there is no one else can help me much with Voc save Robert, who has not the time. James injured limb has troubled him very much this winter. The doctor thinks however, that the terrible injury of the knee has reached its crisis and will improve. His youth is much in his favor. He is one of my most promising and best. Pray for him and for us
Yours truly

S.L.McBeth
