Mt Idaho Jan. 8th 1890
Kate, dear Sister
I have scribbled down the "Estimates" as a sort of guide to you. They are what I
would Estimate as the Expenses of the Nez Perce Mission for 1891. I have put down Expenses
to Presbytery at a guess. You will see when you get Mr-Ds Estimates for last year what he
put down for them. You had better make them the same as last years (Of course Presbytery
will have to decide about who will supply the Spokane churches.) One minister can supply
both churches. There was no need for Archies church with Wellpinit so near. I have put
down expense for one missionary to the Spokans. If Presbytery wants another they can ask
for salary for him. I have put down expenses of work (summer) of Robert & our boys
among the Shoshones. It will do no hurt at least, to ask it. The Board can refuse to grant
it if it cannot give it. (See on Mr D-s Estimates what was salary of James Hayes & put
it the same) I am do not know what William Wheelers salary from the Board
is I have put it the same as Enoch Ponds. Their churches are about the same size and
William has so much leisure to work at Kamiah. Of course Silas, having resigned, does not
need a salary. Dr Ellinwood writes about Archies church at Kamiah. "In any case I do
not think that our Board will authorize the support of a second pastor there over such a
church as you describe in you list of members (I sent him the list you remember.)
So, you do not need to say a word about that Church or salary for Archie in the Estimates.
The matter is now between the Board and Presbytery. According to Presbytery Law &
Usage there is no other Church at Kamiah than Roberts, Archies not-having been
organized according to Church Government. Moses until he went to the Spokans was simply
Archies assistant in that church, and one of the strongest and busiest workers for it. And
will be the same when he comes back most probably. And, as he is not, and never will be
again a licentiate pupil I have not put down any salary for him.
I sent you a note a few days ago with Roberts Report; and the Report of my school, for you to send in with the others. There is no need to send them separately
The salaries you sent me were the salary paid by the congregations added to the salary paid by the Board. Last year Estimates Mr D cut down you know. Robert says he thinks the salaries from Board were $300.00 each except Enochs, and I do not know William Wheelers. Of course if the blanks for Estimates were sent to the Mission Treasurer the Board is intending you to send the quarterly checks to the ministers like Mr D and I do not know any reason why you could not do it as well as he. Better now for you are on the ground. Roberts check Mr D said was to come at Christmas, but it has not come yet.
Not one word to a living soul white or red on the Reserve or Mr D or Dr Gunn &c about what I have written of Dr Ellinwoods words about Archies Church at K. Remember you will do much hurt if you do. Only, of course if Dr E asks anything about the new church speak plainly. The Matter is now between the Board & Presbytery. (Miss F. did us much good with the Board.)
Write to me, as soon as you recieve this, and tell me if you recieved the Reports I sent too. And tell me everything. May God give you wisdom and guide, and help you by His Spirit always prays
Sister Sue
