Rev Dr Ellinwood
Dear Bro.
Yours of Aug 30 was received in due time. With reference to Miss McB & my opinions
respecting Archie being adjusted. I think they are almost the same now as they were before
our conversation. In September last she wrote me a twenty page letter in regard to the
subject. She thinks that he and his friends are opposed to her and her school. I think
they are opposed to her. She opposes them and they retaliate. But I do not think they are
opposed to the school. But as I stated before she has better opportunities than I for
information. But I think this, that those from whom she receives information are not his
friends. But I am glad the case is rested for the present. But to show the feeling of the
brethren of Presbytery I will give you the following item. Last spring I was appointed by
Pres. to prepare the history to report this fall concerning Archie. I read this "At
this meeting of Pres. another of the Nez Perce licentiates, Archie B. Lawyer was ordained
to the gospel ministry. After the surrender of Chief Joseph and his people they were sent
to the Indian Territory. There they were without religious instruction in their own
language. The brethren within whose Presbytery these refugees were located requested the
services of this licentiate of the Presbytery of Idaho. It is due to Miss S.L. McBeth, his
instructor, to state that she for reasons which to her seemed sufficient was opposed to
his ordination. But Presbytery decided otherwise and he was duly ordained. And at his
request he was dismissed to the Presbytery of Emporia. Remaining with his people until
they were sent back to Idaho he returned with them. He has since been preaching among the
Umatillas near Pendleton, Oregon and to his own people at Lapwai Idaho. Reports injurious
to his ministerial character have been circulated concerning him but no formal charges
have been preferred against him. His is at present in good standing in the
Presbytery." Presbytery directed that all from the words "It is due" be
stricken out as being too personal and reflecting too personally on a Co Presbyter
supposedly innocent.
A letter was received from Miss McBeth last week in which she says "Robert Williams was here this A.M. has come twice to Mt Idaho expecting his check (salary from the Bd) but it has not come and he needs it very much and so does Parsons and Moses need theirs. x x x The WB in Northern New York wrote me that they have promised the New York Bd the $200. For Harry Hayes salary which I suppose will come through Mr Boyd too. When will Harrys salary fall due?
I have replied stating that Mr
