Lapwai New years day 1887
A bright beautiful day after such a stormy night. What different scenes here. feasts in
three houses. Jim Moseses, Silases & Abrahams. blankets & long hair going on
horseback or crossing the little foot bridges. but Unconscious of it all lay the poor
dying Mrs Deffenbaugh. today she is wandering in mind for the first time. Dr Sterling to
L. with little hope. nothing that the two Phycians could do has been left undone but for
all this she would have passed over 3 days ago. sustained by injections. I fear she does
not realize - perhaps well - her darling three month old boy & kind husband. One year
ago I was there with all the fine Whites to a party. What a fleeting show all this world
is. Mrs Montieth came out today. Oh Lord forgive all My unkind thoughts. let Me never
forget this.

Oh. Oh another sad day over in the cottage today. Oh. Mrs Deffenburgh died at noon today.
Just Mr D. Mrs Mening Mrs Montieth & My self there. We with Dr Mayer. were
there last night. glad now I sothed her head so she said I was like Aunt Sarah. poor Aunt
Sarah & all the rest of the home friends. What a picture. When Mrs M held her boy to
her lips to be kissed. dear little three month old Bobbie. & After She & Mr D
talked about the parting & the care of the dear boy. the bitterness to both of them
was passed- how She still clung to hope when she said Miss Kate pray for Me I want so to
live for My boy. I can hear her tired sighs yet. Many of the people came to look at her.
Was sorry to see them praying beside her. some of them shook hands strange. Mrs M. is
manageing all things & that is all right Mr D. decided to bury here for a time then
leave for good.
Lapwai Jan 5th 1886 [sic 1887?]
Mrs D in her wedding dress & beautiful casket hermetically sealed is laid temporarily
on the top of the little hill back of the Agents house. Mr Boyd & Silas Whitman
conducted the services in church. the few Whites Men & Women mingled with the not many
Indians. Mr D carying 3.month old Bobby. What changes are likely to come among Nez P. Mr
D. will leave for good & Who can go in & out among this quarrelsome people as he
has done. his Gentle manner. these Eight years. but I cannot wonder that he feels he
cannot stay here. two Wives to die here in I think five years. Mrs McConville
staid with Me & We talked nearly all night about the sad state alarming state of
Morals among the young.
Two weeks tonight since I was called out of Church to Mrs D. dying bed - & yet it all
seems like a dream dear little Bobby has been very sick.
An other new Nez Perce Hymn today. it is good employment for James R. Joseph L. &
George M. Oh how they do love to sing. a good way to sew the seed. Lord [illegible] it
there is much interest in S. S. too - but What a long political speech Joseph L. made. the
drift of it was he was not made Judge by Agent although chosen by the people. Cap K. felt
like rising but the people were stringing out. Enoch & Joseph brought up the Tewat
sub. in Jim Ms house. J has fled to K. it looks as if there was as much heathenism
as fifty years ago. great circles of Women. the trouble here is the heathen are passing
along under the name of Christians. it has been an effort for peace & then purity. Oh
for a R or Solomon here. well may they pray for hamonawit. previous S S. the offerings of
Cain & Able. I was able to rise & bear witness this evening. that Without blood
there is no remission but that Jesus Blood cleanseth from all Sin - bless My Witness Lord.
Lapwai Feb. 18th 1887
I cannot tell how deep the snow is here & what it must be on the mountains- have My
things packed ready to carry out if the Snow goes off with rain. Abram & Wife was here
to dinner. she says great water if a warm wind comes. Now I know the Lord can take it all
away without having Me move at all - been raining or snowing for nearly three months &
Oh so many are sick. After service began today a running Man from the S. entered Gave
Edward a note he & his wife went out. Abraham announced another one of the little boys
at S. was dead Hahats Cunes boy another dear little K. boy. Daniels &
Henrys boys were buried together only on Thursday if these poor fathers reached
home. what soulful hearts in K today. Strange that two such little boys should die of
Apoplexy. poor children sleeping on the floor with two blankets & No fire. God help
poor Indians evreywhere. Archie here. will Not be surprised if he is called by the Warm
Spring Camp and his friends.
Oh how I want to thank the Lord for his care of My dear brother when his Arm was reset.
& Lizzie is better.
Young Noahs little boy is dying to. My Surprise. Noah came at dark to see Me &
when I asked if he wanted anything. Said No but his heart was so sick he came for comfort
or medicine. his eyes were swolen from weeping.
Enoch is better but not at S. S. What a precious lesson beginning with Fear not Abraham I
am thy Shield & exceeding great reward. these words I repeated this evening in prayer
meeting for My Witnessbearing. Lord Jesus make thy own truth to grow in the hearts of the
people.
Lapwai Feb 29th 1887
Well. Well. Again the Lord shows Me that I need not to have troubled My self about the
flood that must come after all the snowing of this whole month. but all told Me My house
would likely go as the mill did 8 years ago. So I have been packed up to move for two
weeks. did not sleep well last night fearing the rushing waters in the night. but the
Master of the Winds has sent them first one way then another & opened up the ground to
receive the snow water & this evening I praise his name bare spots are to be seen.
& the famishing ponies are picking on the mountain sides. two tents of Kamiahns down
near the Fort came through all this fearful way for their children. poor poor people. not
one of them at church today. Jonah says some of their horses are dead. Will the Agent give
the Children up & if he will not what then. Lord hold this matter in thine Own wise
hand. how many seasons of Anxieties Missionaries do see on Mission Ground. Good S. S.
today. James R read the refferences. So far as the peoples coming it is as good as the K.
S. S. but no children. Amelia Bredell dear little Joel lies a corpse today & will not
be buried tomorrow. waiting for the bought coffin to be brought out from Lewiston. the
first Indian that I ever knew to be buryed in any thing but the home made box. today the
letter from Dr Spinning to Archie was read by James R. tracing the influences which
brought the Joseph band back to James & Archie. Some how Dr S. has heard of the
little worship in their own hearts here & exhorts to faithfullness. James discription
of General Assembly was grand for he address it in Philadelphia in behalf of the Josephs.
Red Wolf did not know Just where to look while the letter was being read. Oh but We are
all poor Week creatures.
Lapwai March 8th
No. No. the Agent did not give the Ks their children but put on the whole force of
police to guard them night & day. Allen & his wife were allowed to stay with their
dying child. the 4th K child to die there. of cource the children are
frightened. many are coughing & sore throat two ran off Friday night, four sab. &
11 Sab. night. the two who hurried past here & took up over the hill reminded Me of
the Negroes fleeing in time of slavrey & When the blue panted police rode past in the
rain yesterday I knew they had been searching for the poor little children. Jenny
Slickpoos Mother inlaw says they have got & taken back all three & Jennie had
searched up the two creeks & not found them. but Abraham had not from Cotton Wood yet.
the K said they were starting for home yesterday. but Lucy Says they are in camp up the
river. petitions & a telegram has been sent to Washington. James R the Leader he is
always on the look out for the welfare of his people. A Special Agent is expected but what
he will do is to be seen yet. Oh Lord but I thank the for preventing Me from going down
into that correll as Mr C calls it. Annie is better. I thank the lord much for that.
March 19.
Inspector at Fort hurried on to prevent an out-break. the fifth K boy died while he was
here. it is said the s here & at K will be reopened. how I wish this might be for here
I am alone to the human eye. beyond call of any of the people the creek still running as
it has been in close to My house - making such a noise. Oh that I may be concious all the
time of the presence real presence of Him Who promised Jacob. to Accompany him, to keep
him where ever he would go, bring him again to his own land.
Lapwai 24th March 1887
And Mrs Deffenbaugh commenced the Journey to the old Pennsylvania home today. all that is
of her who came here 1 1/2 years ago a happy bride. poor Mr D. is taking back the second
box & the 2nd boy. I went over early to the Drs house where
her coffin was placed for the night after lying about three months upon the hill. Mr D.
helped with the sodering & packing. a few men there but when he he saw the coffin
& trunks all in the waggon he flew into the house to find a place a place to weep. her
resting place tonight in Lewiston. Mr Menings barn tomorrow. Mrs M Robbie dear child &
Mr D. take the boat. I can see the spices are flowing out from his bruised heart. Sue
answered me today. it will be all right. he is a lovely Christian character & how
broken hearted this people will be when they know he is going to leave soon for good. but
what circumstances do find My self. in here alone 18 or 20 empty houses. Old Agency
buildings but this is the Lord doings & I must take this as a part of My training. Not
in sight or call of the Indian houses. Lord open My eyes to see the Host about me. Able
from K came down for Archies son only this week & was burried today. think nancy does
not know yet anything about it. Abraham said there is a tukin in K Against Robert. poor
Robert. they say he wanted Charley away. & this Agent has killed their children &
all traced to Robert. not James R. they be ready to stone him often as the children of
Israel wanted to Moses but the Lord always delivers R. will yet.
March 29th 1887
the Enemy still after Robert. how often I think of the children of Israel ready to stone
Moses. this time they have a cry that R caused Montieth to be sent away & this new
Agent has caused the death of 7 of K. children & R is the root of all the trouble.
none of the other preachers have such fierce onsets & none grow in grace as R. A
rainy day & the water up near my house & not a White friend to stay all night
with. Oh, that this poor heart would be still. For two nights I rose &
dressed myself - morning showed Me I might just as well have been sleeping - will not feel
like watching from the back door since the blanket got so near Me in the [illegible]
but God is good. Mr Henry flew out of S. two days ago because she though I said stop
school. It will teach Me a lesson but over she came from church carrying My two
chairs which always go when there is a funeral. She told Me she had confessed her
sin in church. Perhaps had as much right to confess. poor thing I ought to
help her more if she is under temptaton. the spirits work praise His Mighty name.
Lapwai April 5th 1887
Just out of My S room window looking over the creek I see a gay looking circle in the
little grove of locust trees shading the little Gods Acre where whites & Indians will
stand up together. Mr Spaulding Mr Montieth Mr McFarland. & I hope this
poor Umatilla boy they are now burring burying - I see the spades going. very likely the
grave is not long enough the eighth S boy to die this winter. seven from Kamiah. he died
at Jim Moses. the little bridge is gone. so near as it is I could not go over. I See Peter
Lindsleys tall figure like Saul among the people. they do not attend funerals here as in K

What a surprise for Robert. W. James H. Moses M & Robert Parsons to stop in this
morning. Mr D. said he would be at Pres. alone - but these Presbyters use their own mind
sometimes. he will be astonished to Meet them. Archie, Peter, Silas & Enock I suppose
will stay at home. Silas announced today that Mr D. will not remain here long perhaps go
to Mt I. for a year. five men sat at My table today & one old woman on the step how
good the Kamiahns seem & they feel good here. R has so much life in his preaching -
Spiritual life I think God bless them all.
Lapwai May 1st 1887
Today I understand what a burdened heart is & think of Sue in years past at K. &
it is Ls here. Stamiton today announced that monday week they were to meet to choose
a Minister - Archie of cource - & how much of chaff his kids & cane
impresses. Just what effect on My work if he is installed - can I work in S. S. Oh I
feel like saying today I cannot stay. the friend will have a prominent place in church.
& Will try to kick up My s. as he came near doing last Winter. Oh but the sighs come
fast today. A feast over at Js A there & Stamitons left Eds & Went
there for dinner poor things the people are like sheep they will follow a few leaders.
Abraham said under the tree When wild geese meet a strong wind they get lost &
bothered.Word today of a bear nearly killing Web Testaments son.
May 8th 1887
Mr D. in the pulpit today. & announced that they could chose one of the eight Native
preachers for their pastor. Spoke of the one who had kept money entrusted to him & if
they believed or knew this to be so it would not be best to have him. Archie - the very
one they have planned for - & knew all this. truly nothing can be hid Oh Lord -
that thy spirit may come to this fold this night & direct them in their choice. Some
one who knows the way Mr D Said only christians to vote. what a blow. Enoch took dinner
with Me & We read the blessed 103. Psalm which he used in prayer meeting Lord Guide
this people in thy footsteps.
May 22
Pres to Meet on 26. to install Peter Lindsley paster here. he had a hundred votes Archie
57. As dishonesty is given as objection I doubt much if they realize the importance
of this step. I fear it will not last long - poor poor ignorant people the best of them at
times seem to have little grace. Egypt & Israel are fearfully mixed up here. I
cannot find a Billy or Mrs Sol among them. many prayers for Kamiah today that the Lord may
guide them in the choice of a paster tomorrow. And the same prayer comes over & over
Lord bring the councils of Ahithepel to foolishness. Sometimes I fear some trap will be
sprung at Pres. & Must I entertain that Beebe How I will Miss Enoch for S S lessons
When he goes to spokans. may the Lord raise up another here.
Lapwai May 27th 1887
Presbytry came off all right or at least the Lapwai people think so. Mr Deffenbaugh is not
going away. could not agree on a Minister here. Archie No. Peter L. refused. & perhaps
well - they do not want native pastor here. What a fine looking body of Men. the four
whites made the people look darker. Calls were read & handed to James Hays from
Umatillas. Wm Wheeler from North F. Kamiah for Robert, Enock & James
Hines to be sent to spokans. Peter refused Lapwai. Call from Moscow for Mr Adair. Beebe
was here on trial for marying a divorced Woman. Mr Boyd read one of her letters in which
she says she divorced herself. Archie & Silas are to be searching for a place to
preach. the Lord in his own time & Way puts things & people in their right places.
Robert is to be enstalled one week from next Sab. I wish I could talk Nez Perce as Whitman
did yesterday. Billy & Solomen took breakfast with Me for their camp was Just over the
creek. & poor Sarah George Moseses wife has crossed over soon after her friend Archies
Wife [illegible] Pic Nic. Mrs Fee came to visit Me. how comical the women all looked with
their high hats & bustles as odd as the handker chiefs & shawls look to Whites.
June 12th
Mr D. preached from 8ch 1st Cor If meat make My brother to offend" &
said the Agent had been to see him yesterday to see if he could not sanction horse racing
on the coming 4th July! Was ever such a proposition made since Paroh
Farah told Moses Just to Worship God in the Land. but What he said was so smothed down the
force was lost. Enoch dear E preached today ready to depart on the Morrow for his work
among spokans. the beautiful picture book goes with E. & Rachel twill help them
talk to that peoples. The Pilgrims Progress was given to James Hays here on his way to
Umatillas. Fanny does not look too happy about the going. R to be installed next sab.
Lapwai June 20th 1887
One week ago this evening Rachel, Enoch & James Hines took supper with Me (Frank also,
& then We Went down to Noahs to see the missionaries cross the fearful river things
from five pack horses & themselves in one canoe - but first the horses were made to
swim across. how cherfully they went the Spokan people to E & R are no strangers E. so
happy to think they wanted him again to the astonishment of Mr D. Enock arrived wore out
to tell Rachels horse had been taken from under her at Genesse a [illegible] boy had
bought it off a White Man who testified to his statement & that Man had bought it from
an Indian. Mr D wrote to Agent Enoch & Paul appeared the next morning with only a
letter from the Agent. Paul was to come back that wednesay to tell us the result. he did
not reach here until Friday morning had been a day & night over the river No one would
risk their lives on the river. he had a letter from dear Mrs Campbell who had recd
the poor troubled ones. Mr C. urged the Agent to come in person. & bring his officers
of Gov along but Not one willing to go Agent said Mr D would as well he would instruct him
how to [illegible] Joseph L. & Mr. D. crossed creek & river early the next morning
Mr D to appear as Enochs defender. Joseph his interpreter. it seems from Joseph & Paul
& Elias it is to be taken to Lewiston & I suppose E & R. & James are far
away today from the beautiful spotted pony. heart doubtless filled with bitterness that
they were not defended by the One who is sent to care for such. Robert was to have been
installed in Kamiah on Sab- but Mr D was in another direction for Enochs defense. Archie
goes to Dr Lindsley to Theological Sem. So the Miller Says. Oh Oh! if these Men only had a
foundation laid in common branches their Theology is the best part of them. Six Agents in
One year Where Miss Dixon? & Miss McCreight is worse than here.
Lapwai July 3d 1887
What strange circumstances I am in today. Seeming alone - alone - the cattle resting at
noon under the cotton woods around My house. I was Just saying perhaps not a human being
nearer than farms? from Me. (but Just saw some of the
over the river band passing). two camps in Gods sight today the one at the Garrison
perhaps a thousand there the other one Just Me & My blessed Master. Why?
to bear Witness that the Lords wish & horse racing should not be mixed up Oh! Lord let
this witness bearing not be lost. Egypt & Israel in one camp today the Lords. Suppose
tomorrow the races. these poor confirming Elders & Minister took or led these poor
Children there after after the Agent fully decided upon the races. Oh how My heart weeps
over the poor slain ones there in that camp - spiritually Slain. Oh if Mr D. had had
courage to say when he found what the arrangements were the ordinance of Lords supper
shall not be there - perhaps his last communion here never did I in My life absent Myself
before. Never once absent on 4th July or feast times before - it is
prayer & tears betimes today but I am not afraid as I feared I would be so far away
from all Visible ones. God My God is here & I am asking that he may make that camp a
Brehem.
4th July 1887
A Silence which can be felt only in L. in his lonely home - that was bright with this
loving face of his young wife 4th & today is all -- the sorrow of not being
appreciated in 23. centre - he is a favorite indeed with the Lord. every Nez P. man Woman
& child is on the camp-race ground - & So think all these poor weak followers are
there by command of the Elders. I feel like asking how many christians are dead in that
camp spiritually - & Who led them to the wapshinmuash? how many anxious hearts in the
East today - what the day may bring forth Oh I hope none of the Indians will get whiskey
God forbid.
Evening was quite alone all day until Peter & Nancy Lindsley came up from camp in
their spring waggon. they in their sorrow had no heart for the races & doings - dear
Nancy how much like an advanced christian she bears this surprising sorrow of
Amelias death. A young Woman about to gragduate at Salem & fell
from a high window there & was brought home a corpse. Peter seems low before the Lord
- they say not much worship at the camp. poor people. May God forgive the leaders.
Aug 7th 1887
this evening in prayer meeting Jim Moses again at Me Lord help Me - he thinks I am against
Archie. Archie & Silas returned from Crows & are to go back after synod - the
question of S. S. half answered nicely. Mr & Mrs Eves Eves walked up
from Fort I like them Robert is installed today Mr Boyd - Mr Deffenbaugh there. Jim will
try & break up My S. but the Lord is stronger than he "Abraham rise for My
defense"
Aug 28th
All packed to start to Lewiston tomorrow Mr & Mrs. Eves to take Me in Agency team.
poor Agent is taking an inventory of propperty today. Oh. Oh. that the Lords spirit would
come among Whites as well as Reds --[illegible] I am getting Old that the Joy of going out
is much less this time. Will Miss my twilight readings with My bible & What what
wonderful things I have found in Chronicles. but much to warn Me. for the best of Kings
had their hearts lifted up wandered from God. to See Sue & Mrs Campbell. I am going
out. May the Lord Make Me a blessing & bring Me back to My work in safety.
Lapwai Nov 12th 1887
Communion eve. eyes red weeping for the slain - spiritually - of this poor L. church. so
many away on the mountains although they know this is communion time. Abraham with his
"tired heart among" them last communion at the race ground- it is no wonder So
many dead ones here. the heathen doings in the [illegible] Oh! Oh! how easy to return to
Egypt. -- few as were at church this afternoon it seemed the spirit was there. dear Robert
preached. My the Lord spare him long to his people (has spit much blood) - The Crows have
come I saw today following Archie. six hatless Men. bright blankets leggins & braided
hair I fear they will not hear much about the true God. speak by sighns. Arrived the Same
evening. Archie & Amy were Married. not six Month since Farlie died! how good to hear
the singing from Roberts tent this dark night, & near Me Just across the creek. My S.
has not started right yet. Oh but Missionaries have anxieties about their work. the Lords
Work. Why So little faith
Sab. evening
yes Archie assisted in the communion then baptized the babies. Oh! & Mr D knows his
guilt. Silas & Peter L were called upon but poor Robert Sat back silent. not asked to
pray. the whole six Crows sat before Me. & Such Crows. painted platted, feathered
beaded & blanketed - spoke through Tom Hill - that all the Whites there knew when they
came poor things. May they recive some light - while here. Of cource Jim M. had to make a
speach. & the Agent. Such a church. how different Kamiah. Lord forgive communion guilt
but it was so hard to see one so unworthy lead in services. Elders Paul & Abraham not
here. both tired hearts.
Lapwai Nov 19th 1887
Well the Crows have come & the Crows have gone & Such bedecked Crows. painted
inside of the ears & the many plaits hanging down their backs not their own hair but
from the skalps of their enemys. & the Nez Perce used to be like them.
they have been prisioners of state never out of Archie sight - Oh dear No s. yet &
cannot see where it is to come from Noahs family gone. Silas. Will I try to take Men. will
I have a sewing S. or what. Lord show Me what to do. I have work every day. today it was
Annie Eliass wife with a dress & a catholic woman with her stocking. Josephs
wife is young & helpful like - but her children.
Thanksgiving 1887
Not many in the church for the later worship. how delightful it is for both Mr D &
Myself to have such a pleasant family as the Eavess here. God given friends indeed.
& I think it a priveledge to go up to the S. Gov. & tell bible stories every
Friday evening if it is in soyappotempt. but My poor little dwindle little S. so depresses
Me. Mr Stephen came two days last week but not here today. only Mrs E & Mrs H. the S.
S. seems to be the work for Me if I only could get it in working order as at Kamiah.
1st Sab of Dec 1887
Such a spirited S. S. David rose & gave the 4th Commandment. how sorry I will be to
lose the large boys. Agent Says all above 10. are to go to start the Fort S. tomorrow.
will they obey & have the people forgotten the terrors of last winter. What a
priveledge it is to spend every Friday evening up at Gov. S. telling bible stories. is the
S. S. to be My work this winter. Did I not see that the spirit was touching some of the
cold hearts. Mr D sermon was a good one planting thorns. How many I have planted. Maria
Moffit was here today. how My heart yearns over these girls from Salem S. I hope Delia is
the only one to go astray. Chrismas things here but[illegible] for people. will they want
it. Lord bless the seed sown today & take away My feeling to Achan.
Dec 8th 1887
Oh, Oh, What a heavy heart. I have just returned from the Gov S. had My s. s. lesson all
ready but Agent Said I must not teach any more the Bible there. So all the fuss about
teaching the native toungue amounts to Just what I thought it did - put the Bible
out. Oh God help Us. for it is true the Nez Perces have gone back. Oh Oh but My heart is
sick & sore. Oh was it ever sorer about the Cause. do all Missionaries have such heart
aches. the dear Eaves family - two new teachers from Lewiston there. My house full of
Christmas things & No Joy in them all. I must quit teaching Nez Perce in Church in S.
S. or I will be followed. in there one thing I am glad of Moses Ms wife has not come. Dec
25 yes. but she has come. been to Kamiah & is now camping over the river in Hin Me tom
Selus tent what will I do
Christmas 1887
this Sab. evening in My own home have such a cold. I hear Archie preaching - so there
would be no profit to Me if there. I thought to day as I listened to Peter Lindsleys
eloquence - & saw James Grants look around that if there is to be another election P.
would still be ahead of Archie. What a croud today 2nd of Luke was S. S.
lesson today. how My heart went out to the 40 boys of the Gov who are to be taken up
to the Fort s. how bright they are will they accept the Christmas Present offered to them
today. Mr D. & Joseph had to step over them to the pulpit so crouded. the new Elder is
to be chosen saturday May God confound the councils of the Many Ahithipels - I hope Peter
will preach Dry bones to dry bones here. Oh. Oh. Rosa Minthorn has come & What will I
do she expects to make My house her home & that cross child! Rosa is sweet looking.
Sue thinks I will not refuse her a place - the Christmas tree tomorrow evening - I have
been looking back through the Eight Christmases here & see the Lord is able to deliver
from all plots - It looks as if I could not remain if Archie is left in charge. I see he
has estranged the hearts of some of the people now J F. is evident. Oh that the Holy
Spirit would come. & put life into his word My prayer is with a heavy heart Lord leave
Not the poor Nez P. to themselves. I do hope the New Teacher & his wife are Godly
people & will care for the Souls of the boys. poor Mr D. has much trouble I remember
his dying wife this time last year.
