Bellwood Programs Will Feature Distinguished Speakers and Experts on National Security Law
As reported previously in “First Monday,” this year’s Sherman J. Bellwood Memorial Lecture, entitled “National Security and the Constitution,” will be unique in its format and in its inclusion of other programs on national security law in an age of terrorism.
- The Bellwood Lecture, on Thursday afternoon, October 12, will feature a dialogue between former U.S. Senators Gary Hart of Colorado and Alan Simpson of Wyoming. Their dialogue will be moderated by UI law professor and associate dean Richard Seamon. The Lecture will begin at 4:00 p.m. in the UI Student Union Ballroom, and will be available for viewing outside Moscow through an on-line webcast. On-line viewers should visit the website address on October 12. On that day the website will contain a link to the on-line program.
- On Wednesday afternoon, October 11, the topic of “Democracy and National Security: Contemporary Issues” will be addressed by a panel of experts. The program, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in the College of Law courtroom, feature Senator Simpson along with Idaho State University professor of political science David Adler; UI law faculty members Elizabeth Brandt (associate dean), Russell Miller, Monica Schurtman, and Alan Williams; and UI law library faculty member Michael Greenlee.
- On Thursday morning, October 12, a second panel will examine “The Idaho Connection: The Church Committee and Its Relevance Today,” focusing on the Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities, chaired by the late Senator Frank Church of Idaho. This program, also to be held in the College of Law courtroom, will feature Senator Hart together with Katherine Aiken, professor of history and interim dean of the UI College of Letters, Arts & Social Sciences; LeRoy Ashby, professor of history at Washington State University; Loch Johnson, professor of public and international affairs at the University of Georgia; UI law professor Russell Miller; and attorney Frederick A. O. Schwarz, Jr., affiliated with the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law.
Further information about the 2006 Bellwood Lecture and panel discussions may be obtained from the organizer of all the programs, Dean Burnett (dburnett@uidaho.edu).
Homecoming Festivities to Include Receptions for Law Alumni
The University of Idaho homecoming, anchored by the Vandals’ football game against New Mexico State on Saturday, October 7, will be preceded by two activities for law alumni. The first, a reception for all law alumni on Friday evening, October 6, will take place in the foyer of the College of Law (Menard Building). The reception, beginning at 5:30 p.m., will provide an opportunity for alumni to greet each other and to “mix, mingle, and munch” with law faculty, staff, and students. The second event will be a law alumni gathering on October 7, prior to the homecoming game. All law alumni are invited to come to the North Kibbie Lawn from 11:00 a.m. until the kickoff at 2:05 p.m. Look for the College of Law banner! Both events are free to law alumni and their guests. Further information about the homecoming events for law alumni may be obtained from Pele Peacock, Student Bar Association president, at peac1715@uidaho.edu.
Northwest Institute Offers Special Courses in Coeur d’Alene
The Northwest Institute for Dispute Resolution, now in its tenth year under the guidance of Professor Maureen Laflin, is charting a new direction by offering courses in the Coeur d’Alene area in addition to the regular courses at Moscow. The special session, co-sponsored with the Conflict Resolution Center and the First District Bar Association, will be held on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, October 11-13, 2006, at Templin’s Resort in Post Falls. The focus of the special session will be on “Building Healthy Outcomes for Post-Divorce Families: Advanced Training for Lawyers, Mediators, and Mental Health Professionals.” Information about speakers, the schedule, and registration is available online. General questions about the Northwest Institute and the special session may be directed to Professor Laflin at mlaflin@uidaho.edu.
Third Annual Indian Law Conference to Be Held on October 24-25, 2006
For the third consecutive year, the College of Law and the Idaho State Bar Indian Law Section will host an Indian law conference featuring national and regional speakers. This year’s conference will focus on the American Indian Probate Reform Act (AIPRA), tribal employment law, development of tribal energy resources, and land consolidation plans and agreements, as well as general legislative and case law updates. The conference will include a keynote address by Michael Bogert, counsel to the Secretary of the Interior, on Department of the Interior initiatives relating to tribal issues and interests. The conference, organized by Douglas R. Nash (Director, Institute for Indian Estate Planning and Probate at Seattle University), and Rob Roy Smith (immediate past president of the ISB Indian Law Section), will be held on Tuesday, October 24, and Wednesday, October 25, at the College of Law. (The keynote dinner will be at the University Inn/Best Western hotel in Moscow.) Further information about the program, speakers, and registration can be obtained online.
