Wednesday, May 5 2004
May 5, 2004^MOSCOW -- Katelin Baldus, from Camas, Wash., graduates from the University of Idaho in public communication in May -- exactly 100 years after her great-great uncle Reuben W. Overman (1881-1936) graduated in 1904 with a math degree.^She also is a third-generation woman in her family to attend UI: Her mother, Barbara J. Sinclair Baldus earned a degree in journalism in 1974, was editor of the Argonaut in spring of 1974 -- exactly 30 years ago -- and now owns her own design business, Very Graphic.^Kate’s grandmother, Ruth Hilbourne Sinclair, was a UI student for two years before she married. She graduated from Grangeville High School in 1934 and worked for two years to be able to go to college. She also worked at the UI bookstore and belonged to Pi Beta Phi Sorority.^On the Baldus side, Ron, Kate's father, received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. from UI in chemical engineering, the last degree in 1978. Other relatives named Baune are part of Kate’s legacy as well. Counting all of her cousins and relatives, they add up to 70 years of attendance at UI over 100 years.^Katelin also stands on her own merits. She recently won an Alumni Excellence Award as a scholar, was on the Student Alumni Relations Board, was recognized for her hard work in the Housing Office and temporarily taking over the Administrative Assistant position, was president of the Advertising Club, and is active in the Residence Housing Association.^After graduation, she plans to move to the Portland area and pursue a career in event planning, advertising and promotion. She says she will keep Idaho close at heart while working to expand the university's Young Alum program.^"I'm proud of my Vandal roots and family legacy here at the University of Idaho. Idaho will always be a part of my past, present and future.”^CONTACT: Barbara and Ron Baldus, bjandron@comcast.net, Kenton Bird, JAMM interim chair, kbird@uidaho.edu, (208) 885-4947; Katelin Baldus, kbaldus@uidaho.edu, (360) 860-1200^-30-^nh/5-5-04/CLASS^
