Fifth UI Coeur d’Alene Commencement May 10

April 28, 2004^COEUR D’ALENE - Approximately 95 University of Idaho Coeur d’Alene candidates are eligible for degrees at the local Commencement, set for 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 10, in the North Idaho College Schuler Auditorium in Boswell Hall.^Commencement speaker is David J. Matheson from Worley, CEO of the Coeur d’Alene Casino and Resort Hotel and a member of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe who launched and made profitable the existing casino, resort hotel and 18-hole golf course.^A President's Medallion will be awarded to Judith C. Meyer, Hayden resident, higher education advocate and former president of the State Board of Education, who helped develop the Northern Idaho Center for Higher Education.^Two inspiring grads exemplify the role of non-traditional UI-Coeur d’Alene students:^Gloria Hanson is a single mom who has creatively met obstacles while completing her goal to become a Spanish/math teacher. She drove the 90-mile round-trip to classes in Coeur d'Alene and the 250-mile round-trip to Moscow occasionally. She even brought her children along with her to Spanish Study Abroad class located at Tecnologico De Monterrey, Querétaro, Mexico. Her drive to complete her degree and her devotion to her children helped her go the extra mile. Hanson received the UI Alumni of Excellence Award in December. ^Garren Taylor, a PE major from Kellogg, already is devoted to youth of northern Idaho. For the last seven years, he has led the Young Explorers Society in Kellogg, which works with teenagers. He is a supervisor for Idaho's Summer Youth Program and is a certified disc jockey. He often volunteers his time for schools, and currently student-teaches in Kellogg. He served four years in the U.S. Army, with a year in Korea and two and half in Tacoma, Wash. He also drives for the community ambulance. He was president of the Physical Education Major's Club in Coeur d'Alene and was named Coeur d'Alene Rotary Student of the Month in February.^May UI Coeur d’Alene graduates and their hometowns are: ^ATHOL Joann Christi Rasmussen, M.
