43 Idaho Students Receive Biomedical Research Fellowships

Wednesday, March 26 2003

March 26, 2003^The Idaho Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN) Program will support summer laboratory experiences for 43 undergraduate students from throughout the state through paid fellowships. ^The students will conduct research for 10 weeks this summer in labs at the University of Idaho, Idaho State University or Boise State University. Experienced research scientists will guide their projects. The students also will attend seminars and present their research during an annual BRIN Research Conference in Boise in August.^Patricia Gardner participated in the program as a UI undergraduate last summer, working with UI mechanical engineering Professor Bob Stephens, Moscow physician Dr. Wayne Ruby and nurse Norma Bishop of Moscow’s Gritman Family Birthing Center.^Gardner’s project led the four to share co-inventor honors of a patent-pending device that more comfortably restrains newborn infants for medical procedures.^“The caliber of applicants was impressive,” said Mike Laskowski, who directs the BRIN program and the WWAMI Medical Education Program at UI. “Many of the students participating in the BRIN Undergraduate Fellows Program represent the next generation of biomedical researchers in Idaho.”^The Idaho BRIN Program is funded by an $8 million, three-year grant from the National Centers for Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health.^The grant was awarded in 2001 to UI in cooperation with ISU and BSU. This award supports the three universities’ efforts to enhance opportunities for Idaho’s faculty as well as undergraduate and graduate students to perform biomedical research.^The Idaho BRIN Undergraduate Summer Fellowship Program, which provides a $5,000 stipend to each selected student, will mark its second summer.^Students receiving fellowships, and their educational institutions, include:^IDAHO^BLACKFOOT Michael Luedeman, ISU^BOISE Kencee Amyx, Albertson College of Idaho^ Jennifer Cole, BSU^ Ayush Goyal, BSU^ Ashley Kunz, Albertson College of Idaho^ Jacob Pierson, UI^ Sheri Wardwell, UI^ Matt Weigand, UI^BUHL Nicholas Clark, ISU^DOWNEY Travis Nielsen, ISU^EAGLE Ethan Fry, BSU^ Nicole Richardson, BSU^GLENNS FERRY Amanda Gluch, Albertson College of Idaho^ Amanda Rogow, BSU^GRAND VIEW Richard Knight, UI^HAGERMAN Madeline Richie, ISU^IDAHO FALLS Jordon Adams, ISU^ Melissa Mott, ISU^ Erica Raterman, UI^ Kristyn Shaw, ISU^LEWISTON Justin Cochrane, Lewis-Clark State College^ Steven Kennedy, Lewis-Clark State College^ Sara Lorenz, Lewis-Clark State College^MARSING Saro Pegg, BSU^MERIDIAN Amber Hibberd, BSU^MOSCOW Christina Rea, UI^ Julia Williams, UI^ Eugene Yockey, UI^MOUNTAIN HOME Theodora Caldwell, BSU^ Sarah Hoffman, UI^NAMPA Elizabeth Figueredo, Northwest Nazarene University^ Seth Kuhlman, BSU^PARMA Thomas Plocher, UI^POCATELLO Pahresah Roomiany, ISU^PRINCETON Hannah Knecht, UI^REXBURG Michael Hill, Brigham Young University - Idaho^ Amanda Stewart, Brigham Young University - Idaho^ Brad Wynn, Brigham Young University – Idaho^ST.
