Description:
This work provides an assessment of the capability of existing canal companies to deliver artificial recharge to the Snake River Plain aquifer. Data are provided for each canal company examined in the study; as are discussions of the limitations and technical challenges inherent in artificial recharge of the aquifer using the existing delivery systems. Recharge capabilities documented in this report are limited to the major canal systems overlying the Snake River Plain aquifer. Recharge opportunities or potential associated with new projects or developments, and the numerous smaller diversions were not addressed. This study addresses the capability of existing canal systems to deliver artificial recharge, assuming water is available. Water availability is an important consideration, since it is possible to have conditions where canal capability to deliver water to a recharge sites exceeds the availability of water to do so. Data for this study were obtained from existing canal company operating records held by Water District No. 1 and by interviews with canal company managers. Results of these interviews are documented in respective reports for each company, which are included as appendices to this study.
