- Description:
- This report presents comparisons of different methods of estimating average annual discharge of ungaged streams. The primary purpose of the estimates being for making hydropower feasibility investigations that utilize flow duration curves. The published methods of McDonald (1048), Rosa (1968), Heitz (1980, 1981) and Hawley-McCuen (1982) were used on selected streams in Idaho to make the comparisons. The methods have been developed over a considerable period of time and have used different periods of records but all have used normal annual precipitation estimates as the basis for prediction. Reasonable agreement was obtained in the comparisons but inconsistencies do appear on some drainages. Several additional approaches to improving the estimates and hopefully correcting the inconsistencies have been postulated and techniques for study recommended.
