Description:: The size of this bowl suggests that it is a gohan chawan, or rice/soup bowl. It is one of two similarly decorated vessels in the Japanese Gulch Village assemblage that feature a kiri, or paulownia, element hand-painted in cobalt blue and brown pigments underneath a colorless glaze with numerous white inclusions that give it a grainy appearance. The veins in the leaves of the paulownia were created with a resist technique such as sumi hajiki (ink resist). See Etsuke Kiri Chawan (hand-painted bowl) [1].
