SUBJECT: Torrey Lawrence Appointed Provost and Executive Vice President
After a national search resulting in more than 70 applications, and the careful consideration of five highly qualified finalists, I am pleased to announce Torrey Lawrence accepted permanent appointment to Provost and Executive Vice President, the position he has filled in an interim role since April.
The appointment is effective immediately.
Torrey’s knowledge of and dedication to the University of Idaho bring key strengths to the position that will continue to benefit the university through the challenges ahead. His leadership during the pandemic, improvements to faculty process and commitment to our students show he is the right person to lead the academic side of our Vandal house. Feedback from across the university during the finalist interviews showed overwhelming support for Torrey’s leadership.
He has been a Vandal for over 22 years, coming to U of I as faculty in the Lionel Hampton School of Music. He served as Director of Athletic Bands from 1998-2012, Associate Director of the School of Music from 2012-13 and Director from 2013-17. He served as an Associate Dean in CLASS, then moved to the Provost’s Office in 2018 as Vice Provost for Faculty before being named Interim Provost and Executive Vice President earlier this year.
He received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in music performance and wind conducting from the University of Oregon. He also holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Northwestern University.
As Provost and Executive Vice President, Torrey will lead the academic mission of the university and, therefore, a broad scope of areas including faculty matters, student success, budget management, strategic planning, and academic programs.
Please join me in congratulating Torrey in his appointment to this new role.
