- So that the wood cylinders used at all stations may be exactly alike they are lathe-turned from carefully selected ponderosa pine sapwood. Two sizes are used, the 1/2-inch diameter 'triplets', and the 2-inch diameter size. Both are 18 inches long. At all stations the cylinders are held level, 10 inches above the ground, with the ends pointing north and south, the tagged end north, and the number right side up. G. Lloyd Hayes pictured here.
