- Abstract:
-
Nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE) in Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) can be determined by using 15N stable isotopes as a tracer. Understanding of NUE is important when establishing fertilizer management practices to improve the sustainability of production practices. and for quantifying the effect of N movement within the soil profile on the environment. Three malt barley cultivars were planted over two years, 2017 and 2018, in Aberdeen, Idaho, USA. Tissue samples were taken throughout the growing season at Feekes 4/5, 10.0, 11.2 and at maturity. Plants were isotopically analyzed to determine uptake and partitioning of N throughout the plant, as well as assimilation throughout the growing season. Tissue was collected from the field after production for the use to monitor the decomposition rates. A laboratory experiment observing decomposition patterns in a controlled environment over 50 days’. With treatments in residue placement, residue size and soil types.
