- In preparing this thesis the writer had three objects in view: (1) to discover, if possible, the cause of poor spelling ability; (2) to attempt to provide a remedy; (3) to carry on the remedial measures under every-day school conditions. In studying the spelling ability of school children, there are a number of questions that present themselves: (1) what words should be selected for the test; (2) how many words should be used; (3) how difficult should the words be; (4) should the words for the test be given in sentences, or dictated as a spelling lesson.
