Abstract:
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine and determine the effect and benefits, if any, of the Parent Project, a court approved intervention and remediation program for parents of teenagers classified as at-risk youth, adjudicated, or both. Results of the study informed school administrators and other policy makers about the efficacy of this project as a resource to assist students and parents cope with dangerous adolescent behaviors.;The study interviewed 10 parent participants who attended and graduated from the Parent Project in two rural counties in the state of Idaho. The research questions were: (1) Curriculum: What were the perceptions of parents who completed the Parent Project in North County or South County (fictional names) regarding the effectiveness of the Parent Project curriculum? (2) Facilitators: What were the perceptions of parents who completed the Parent Project in North County or South County concerning the effectiveness of the trained facilitators? (3) Sustainability: What were the contextual conditions that influenced the sustainability of the Parent Project in the two rural communities?;The study found high levels of satisfaction and efficacy in each of three areas. Additionally, five themes emerged from participant interviews: Behavioral Influences, Family, Parent Education, Out-of-Control Behavior, and External Factors. The themes provided " voice " testimony for public and private funding opportunities.;Recommendations for the Idaho Juvenile Justice System, community leaders, and school administrators included the need for longitudinal studies of program graduates, state and federal funding for the project and similar research-based programs, and professional development for school administrators and other educators.
