- Abstract:
- This qualitative study presents a unique perspective of the lived experience of self-doubting, returning women community college students. It challenges the (mis)conception that self-doubt necessarily produces negative consequences or negatively impacts students' performance. Determination, persistence, and having something to prove emerged as more important qualities in establishing academic success for these women. Several women reported their self-doubt actually fueled their return to school, because it forced them to look at the direction of their lives.;The study was conducted in two phases. Phase I included 154 adult students enrolled in community college study methods courses over a two semester period. Phase II focused on seven returning women students from that population. These women differed in age, marital status, background, and whether they had young children at home. However, their common characteristic was above average self-doubt.;Data were collected through questionnaires (Phase I) and individual interviews (Phase II).
