Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to understand child care providers' motivation to learn about feeding young children. Nine focus group interviews were conducted with child care providers in child care settings from four states in the Western United States: California, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. At each focus group interview, three to eight participants viewed two video vignettes on feeding young children and participated in a facilitated discussion that were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed to identify themes related to participants' motivation to learn about feeding young children (Ely et al., 1997; Strauss & Corbin, 1990). A primary theme that emerged was the presence of hedonistic emotions. Child care providers' immediate and anticipated feelings of pleasure along with their desire to avoid pain influenced their motivation to learn. Also, a theoretical framework for adults' motivation to learn and learning was developed that describes four phases involved in the learning process: phase, 1 beginning learning; phase 2, during learning; phase 3, post learning; and phase 4, intentions. Hedonistic emotions were imbedded within and throughout the theoretical framework. To enhance adult motivation to learn and learning, adult educators should identify and attend to learners' hedonistic emotions. The theoretical framework for motivation to learn and learning is one approach that can be to do this, as it addresses hedonistic emotions in adults' motivation to learn at each phase of learning.
