View of McFadden Mountain - 1955 and 2019

The Big Creek airstrip is north of Edwardsburg and just up the road from the Big Creek Lodge. This area hasn’t experienced significant wildfire for approximately 100 years. Evident in these photographs are consistent dense stands of conifers on the hogback to the viewers right of the airstrip, and on McFadden Mountain in the background. One change is the removal of fencing along the airstrip. Originally used to keep stock and elk herds off of the runway, its absence speaks to changes both in elk populations and methods of backcountry access.
